About Last Night: Concert in the Park

Mark that off my list of summer things to do because I went to an awesome concert in the park last night. Evan Watson {genre=blues!} was playing along with his amazing band. We sat on the grass, had a lunchbox of snacks and jammed out to pretty awesome music. And I DID bring my camera!

Here are some pics I took to document the wonderful night:

Melinda and I were commenting on how not-bluesy Evan Watson looks. Seriously, though, he looks like someone I went to high school with, not a blues singer. But he is a good one, at that.

My brother {left} found amazing seats, right there in the action. It was a little crammed, but much better than the spacious spot Melinda and I had found way in the back. {Fortunatly I had thought to wear shorts underneath my skirt}. One the right is Shana, remember he skull ring?

Nicky, Tracy, Melinda: three awesome babes I dare to hang out with.

Melinda and I. Apparently I look like I belong on the cover of Almost Famous, according to Tracy.

She doesn't. Though, I do like my reflection in there.

Emily's burger and fries {the fries were good, but I forgot to ask her where she got that}.

Lots of people just hanging out on the grass jamming to some good music.

Honestly, when I was told it was a concert in the park in Mt. Vernon {not the Mt. Vernon you know, its the downtown of Baltimore}, I was like "what park?" It's pretty teeny.

I have a few shaky videos of them performing that I hope to be able to post. One of some song I don't know {still good} and one of their version of TLC's Waterfalls. I knew all the words. They also did She Came in Through the Bathroom Window which I would have also recorded if I weren't so busy dancing. Goodness, it was amazing!

Confession #7: I Feel Most Comfortable in a Swimsuit

11 Things I Love About Summer, Part II

This Part is about Summer in the City, what I had to get used to and what was easy to get used to.

1. The jokes surrounding tentanus shots and swimming in the Baltimore Harbor
2. Being able to walk places without absolutly dying of heat. It was hot, yes, but not deadly.
3. Pointing out all of the tourists to my untrained friends
4. Free movie nights outside
5. All the amazing music in Historic Fells Point
6. The Farmer's Market
7. Having fun, crazy, adventurous nights with company {ie random pizza outings, museum crashing, dancing in the streets, etc.}
8. It not getting dark until 8:30 at night
9. Random pick up games of ultimate frisbee
10. Having gelato by the side for instant quenching
11. Awesome hours spent going through CDs and Albums at the Sound Garden

Yes, I can get used to Summer in the City. Yes, Florida has its beaches that are a short drive's away, but when driving is unnecessary, plans don't have to be so taught. Things are flexible and any shenanigans can happen.

An Amazing Project for the Undiscovered

I am so glad ChickNamedHermia told me about this project she is doing, seriously, it is an amazing endeavor she in undertaking.

Basically, she wants to expose all of the under exposed bloggers who deserve the attention. People who work hard to express themselves to the world but don't seem to get enough recognition. Isn't that amazing? I love how selfless this is. It's potentially groundbreaking.

I'm not sure what she is going to do with the newly discovered blogs {interviews? guest posts?} but I can't wait to find out!

Inspiration: Etc. Wallpaper

I remember way back when a family friend's half bath downstairs was wallpapered in old newspaper. Then, I was probably five or six, but this first introduction to innovative interior design has stuck with me sense. It has always been a dream of mine to have nautical charts as wallpaper in the bathroom. So, here are a few photos I have compiled for you:

I love how sea farer this is, classically nautical with a flavor of the rugid realism. Looking at this photograph, the room full of the muted worn colors, tricks my nose into smelling the salt.

This is a little bit more childlike play on the nautical theme. The tones seem appropriatly boyish, while giving him room for growth along with the room.

A sure talking point. Without much furnishings, the owners of the home let the wall do the talking while playing up the age of the space.

Simple and iconic. The wall doesn't overpower the space, but gives it dimension a plain wall wouldn't have done.

The best fireworks I have ever seen were three years ago in Washington DC. I was in a wheelchair with my mom and uncle. This was before we moved back up to Baltimore, so we were staying at his house which is just outside of DC. It was a ton of fun but I don't dare go this year because it is going to be a mad house.

Okay so Baltimore has its famous natives that have been known to stop by every now and then, a la John Waters. Once, I even had a dream that Edward Nortan was the bagboy at the grocery mart and Mike Rowe {the "Dirty Jobs" guy} was my plumber. I don't know if either of them ever come to Baltimore, but it was a pretty cool dream.

Spotting a famous person in Baltimore is bit different than in New York City. A) New York as many times more famous people and B) New York is a part worldwide popular culture and Balimore is sort of an insider's culture and makes it more special when you see someone "famous". I once saw Anthony Bourdain, a food journalist with a Gonzo twist, outside of Mo's seafood when I was driving down the road. Sure enough, he mentions the restaurant in his opening sentence. Once, even, my brother was on a plane with Cal Ripkin Jr. coming from Baltimore and headed to our tiny Florida town {who woulda thunk it?}. He didn't want to alienate him, so he held his tongue. He already had his autograph anyway, I guess.
It's a special thing when you see someone you recognize from somewhere big.

So the other day I was with a friend and we were walking in historic Fell's Point looking for something to eat. It was a weird time of day, like 3 maybe 4, so the Sushi joint we wanted to go to was closed. We decided to go to the Daily Grind and get smoothies or something {too hot for coffee}. There is this one stretch of cobble stone street that is not friendly to pedestrians so we walk across to the other side of the street with the greatest of caution.

When we finally get to the other side, I take a breath and look to the side we just came from, noticing that construction is going nowhere with the old set of Homicide that they are planning to turn into a hotel of some sort. Melinda comments on the jewelry shop on our current side and I look at the little cafe that is sitting on the corner we are standing at. On the side of its building, there are the usual cafe-esque tables with umbrellas over them and sitting at the one closest to us is a group of people with papers, hunched backs, and some sort of mocha on ice. These aren't "business" people in suits. They are creative types working on their current project. I know creative types when I see them because I am one myself. Keep in mind this is all happening in a span of about 10 seconds, maybe shorter. The blonde Sophia Copola woman who is facing toward me takes a sip of her coffee and nods as the man across from her says something. The woman to her right is writing something down on her identical version of the paper "Sophia" has in front of her as well. Both women aren't particularly glittery enough for me to take note at what I am looking at.

But as Melinda starts walking with me in tow, I notice the man has a querish posture. His hand his at his head gracing his thinning hair. His black turtle neck must have been hot, but when I saw it I noted how beatniky is was. This is when it occurs to me who this is. I never got conformation. He never turned around to show off his awkwardly handsome face graced by a wonderful pencil-thin moustach. But the back of his head was most definatly John Waters.

Unfortunatly, I remained silent and didn't say anything. All I did was stare for a bit longer than normal and catche a grimacing expression from the waiter who was standing outside the doorway. I was too chicken to say "Hey Melindaaaa, let's walk down this street and get a peek!" Blasphemy!

When have you ever spotted someone famous in your town when you were just minding your own business? Did you say anything? Or did you silently die inside?

1. books, 2. Untitled, 3. ., 4. crumpled, 5. Lighter than a Feather, 6. Feels Like July, 7. because i don't always remember being a woman .., 8. who shall wear the starry crown?, 9. we understand more than we know

1. Reading whatever I want, whenever I want, however I want with no one expecting me to analyze Steinbeck's lengthy descriptions of the landscape.
2. Curling up in my bed {the cat is on my head at this point} with the AC down low to contrast with the hot day I just spent out on the beach {switch bed with couch, and add a couple of hours of Muder She Wrote, and you've got yourself the perfect afternoon on the beachside}.
3. Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream running down my hand as I try my best to eat it before it is totally melted.
4. Wearing nothing but a bathingsuit and a sundress all day long.
5. My refusal to wear flipflops unless they have good arch support. I would rather go barefoot.
6. The taste of Burt's Bees Lifegaurd's Choice on my lips. And while we're at it, I love the smell of sunscreen and ocean salt.
7. Getting rid of my speedo tan.
8. How blonde my hair gets
9. Clothes hanging outside on the line to dry.
10. Swimming whenever I get the chance, in the ocean, the gulf, the harbor {only when skiing, I'm not that crazy}, the pool. Anything.
11. Borrowing ten books from the library and only reading two of them.

I look Naomi's idea to do a feature where I want you to tell me in either an email or a comment 11 reasons {because summer is so good that I decided to kick it up to eleven} why you love summer. Or what it is about summer that makes you smile and I will choose some to post on here.

*Part 1= what I know. This year is my first full summer in Baltimore {as an adult}. Last summer, I did spend some time here but it was mostly stuck in an office twittling my thumbs. There will be a parts 2 and 3.

My dad is not like other dads. Sure, he works for a car business {Mini Cooper and BMW}, very manly, and likes to jam out to Pink Floyd, but he is actually quite a dandy. Even though his father was a carpenter, he has a shed full of un touched tools; it's just not his thing. He is particular about his shoes and looks like Indiana Jones {if only he could grow a moustache}. My brother and I agree that Baltimore embraces ugliness. Not the ugliness you think, but artistic ugliness. You know, Campiness as opposed to Dandyness.

This weekend is the 2009 HonFest which I am going to for the first time. This kind of makes up for not doing Halloween last year {which disappointed me greatly}. What is required to complete the Hon look is a Beehive hairdo {They tried to make me go to rehab but I said...}, somesort of animal print of hibiscus print, horned glasses, and a great Bawlanerese accent.

I have the dress {zebra print}, the glasses, the accent, am going to do the hair, but no shoes! That I am a bit worried about. And my neck {which I have strained really badly from doing so many crafts, who woulda thought?}. A few friends are going along with me and we are going to have a blast!!! So excited!

Confession #2: My biggest insecurity is my neck

I promised I would keep up this confessinal and have decided to try to do it for 52 weeks straight.

I have a super long neck. Like really long. And sometimes I like having it. It is especially conenient for head on shoulder sessions. But sometimes I don't like having it. Sometimes I wish my neck were just like everyone else's.

But maybe I just need to remind myself that having a long neck is great for ballet {at least, that is what my ballet teacher would say all the time}.

Confession #1: I love harmonicas and any other good pickin' fun

Reading through my blog, I noticed something: there is only a part of myself written up on here. There are other parts of me that really make me...me. So I thought of something. As a new practice with myself in life, I have decided to notice things about myself and write them down. So each week I will share something new about myself on this blog that none of you guys know about me. Some of these should come as a surprise.

This week?
I love harmonias. In fact, it is probably my favorite instument. It's not the saxophone, as I have led most of you to believe because a) that is the instrument I play and b) it's jazz! The reason the saxophone is not as cool as the harmonica is because you can't just stick it in your pocket and rip it out when you feel like jammin out. You can do that with a harmonica.

Jazz is great and I LOVE to dance to it, but really, the back porch rhythms is my heart. I can drive to the for longs period of time. Just through in an accordian, a banjo, and bass, and a few washboards and you can steal my heart {kidding.}

You all know that I love Bob Dylan {who doesn't?}. Why? Because of his harmonica.

I can't help it I'm a sucker for those things.

Happy Weekend: Summer Is On Its Way

My summer vacation starts soon which means it's time to start deciding what is really going to happen this summer. Of course, there are always those things I do every summer such as my mother's family reunion. One weekend in July {usually about a week after my brithday}, all 100 or so of my mom's side of the family gathers to a cabin on a lake in Alabama. We laugh, cook, eat, play cards, go swimming in the lake, and all and all build lasting relationships with one another. It is really special, as I get older, to see how the older generations {or the older of my generation because my mom's mom was the youngest, our clan is much younger than the rest of the generation} are starting to treat me like a participating member of society. Also, now that I am older, I know it is important to reach out to the generation two years older because they have plenty of stories to share. All you have to do it just ask.

What is your favorite summer memories that you look forward to each summer? I would really like to know!

Maryland's is the blackeyed susan. All of our official state symbols are color corridinated. That's why Maryland is far superior to anyother state {I kid}.

And Florida's is the orange blossom. Which makes sense. Everything is orange this orange that in Florida.

New Amsterdam

So there was this show called New Amsterdam about this guy who was immortale since the sixteen hundreds. Joanna Goddard published a post that reminded me of this show {it was good until it got cancelled, which was a huge bummer as you can imagine}. Everything about the show was so creative and well done. John Amsterdam {a play on New York's original name, and he changed his name every twenty years or so} was currently a homicide detective. With each case, it somehow related to his past. So it would flash back to the twenties or coloniel times {it was a real eyecandy for a history buff like me}. I remember loveing, I mean realllyy loveing the theme song. There was also this one scene that was great, too. So here it is Joanna:

Okay, okay...I know. I haven't been on here to really post in a good while. And I could make excuses like I have been sick as a dog, busy with school, and with church. But I won't. Instead I will just treat you with a little June Cleaver. I am not much of a domestic fan, though I am NOT, I repeat, NOT a feminist. I think a man deserves to have a supportive wife; my mom resigned from her high status job when I was three to take care of us. But she was no June Cleaver {I do not believe that a wife has to stay in the kitchen or whatever. She gets to have options, too, whatever they may be: to stay at home or to work}. She filled it with music, movies, books, and fun {I stole that little quote from Gilmore Girls from Rory's valedictorian speech}. Just before bedtime, she would read my two older brothers and I Roald Dahl books such as Matilda and BFG and my personal favorite: James in the Giant Peach. So this week, with the superbowl and all, I am going to pay a tribute to mothers who chose to stay home {I believe Joanna Goddard's mother did the same as my mother, if I am not mistaken}. So, behold: Aprons!
Because it is superbowl, many men like to take on the more manly jobs such as grilling the burgers *cue Tim Allen grunt* or doing the chilli. And it is usually up to the women to do the rest whether it is simply to just lay out chips and salsa or to go all out with pigs in blankets and mini pizzas. I have this love for bicycles that is unexplanable. Just their whole concept, the way they work, their aesthetic, and so on. It is actually kind of ironic because I didn't learn how to ride a bicycle until I was about eight or nine years old. Okay, so I found this amazing blog. Don't ask me how, I just stumbled upon it somehow. I am in love. Here's the concept: when a photo fits a song or a song fits a photo. Yeah, amazing concept right? When I opened the website up, the most recent post happened to feature Bob Dylan's version of "A Man of Constant Sorrow." I looked through the pages and saw pictures that made me think "Hey! There's Clint Eastwood" or "That's the photo of Bullitt I had on my blog" or "Is that Zooey Deschanel" and then soon after, "Hey, there she is again." Then when I played started paying attention to the songs {it took a moment to realize that there were songs to go along}, I though "A oui, La Valse D'amelie is a lovely song" and "Haha, the Ramones," and "Cooollll...the National. Great Stuff," and when I saw Charles Trenet, I knew it was a match made in heaven. If a site gets me to think all these great things, then they are doing good.

The song taste is brilliant and the photos are perfectly matched. bottom line: I am in love.

My Own Color Predictions: A Look At History {and modes of transportation}

This post is extremely photo heavy and took me forever to compile. So, that said, I hope you enjoy.

So, as most of you probably know, Coco+Kelley is doing this wonderful Color Predictions Segment. I decided, since my favorite color combination didn't show up, that I should do my own. I hope she doesn't mind I use her idea for a post, :).

Okay, here it is. I'm a bit of an Anglophile and I guess my color set will reflect that. It's the classic Oxford University Colors and British Racing Green {BRG}. {For the BRG click here, here, and here}. The color BRG was established in the early 1900s and became popular in the twenties. By the fourties, it was an automotive staple. There are many different variations of BRG, but the truest is close to a forest green. And here's a splash of Oxford Navy. I think its history is pretty clear.

I posted a photo a few months ago that will perfectly display the combination. {Ironincally, this picture was taken at Niagra Falls and not in the UK.} Here is is:

Okay, taking this photo for what it is: the muted colored fabrics and old boots {very Amish of course, but also a little Anglo-esque, as well}, its not just the colors but the styling as well. The ridged conservatism yet its natural and unrefined state {a little sloppy, work clothes.} Their buttons and all buttoned to the very top, their shoe laces are snug, their suspenders are all fastened and holding up their trousers {sorry, a little Brit jargon}, but their is still something very lax about it. The boy on the end has his jacket just kind of slung over his shoulder. Nothing deliberate. And that is what this is about.

What comes to mind, to really display the culture and time period I am talking about is Keira Knightly's costume in Atonement. No, not that dress. It was magical, yes. And the right color, yes. But it isn't everyday like my example. Here it is:

See? Buttons and hair and makeup are all straitened and neat, but there is still that same lax about it. {This was a 2007 movie}

It was the everyday wear of school boys and girls. There were regulations, but because of its run of the mill, it became routine and thrown on. In the early fourties, fashion, for most people, became just a statement of utility. With the colors of the uniforms for the Royal Navy, Royal Army, and Royal Air Force, it was as if the women and men on the homefront's wardrobe was dictated. Imagine: the London Blitz, strict regulations, and many soldiers still filling London Hospitals {often transformed from schools and office buildings}, concern with every detail was probably impossible.

And an example of not colors, but an archive of what school children looked like:

Here's a Flickr fashionista {that's what I call them} example:

Look at her collar, her dress, and her cardigan. Very together. Very sloppy. Perfect colors for my example.

Here is a women with that look:

But then, what happens when the even truer and more fashionable colors of the time period are added? Here: dark green, navy, garnet, and gold. The colors of the early and mid 1940s. Garnet and Gold were worn by primarily women probably to stand out, just like red lipstick. My movie example again includes Keira Knightly which is the 2008 Brit Movie, The Edge of Love. Everything about it is absolutely lovely. In the two pictures I have shown, they are on a beach in Wales {I believe}.

There it is: that pulled together yet open look. If I accomplish this in my lifetime, I will be surely pleased. Keira plays the fictional/non fictional Vera Williams. Dylan Thomas, famous poet is played by Mathew Rhys.

It is coming apparent to me that colors often parallel those of transportation.

Moving on the the gold:

Sienna Miller is Dylan Thomas's wife, Caitlin MacNamara. The yellow of Keira's Sweater {actually both of them wear it in the film} is that familiar classic yellow. It's an old yellow when you see it on nursing home tenants, but on a young person, it is absolutely devine.

The mustardy hue is very close {and was popular because} this US Marine plane:

Now, let's move forward about twenty or thirty years later:

Yes, Annie Hall {my favorite romantic-comedy}. Now, Diane Keaton's wardrobe in Annie Hall has often been imitated {guilty as charged} and sometimes its a dog-gone travesty. But, for once, I'm not just talking Annie Hall's clothes. Woody Allen's, too {it's funny how for some people I use their character name and others I use their real name}. The sixties and seventies seem to have that Oxford navy, British Racing Green, Maroon/Garnet, and Gold/Yellow revival. Though, it isn't as rigid as the wardrobe's in the 1940's, it still has that lack of refinement. Nice and understated.

Annie Hall {done in 1977} is not my only movie example. Back to British Racing Green {remember, women: if you say BRG to a guy, they are sure to be impressed}. The color even made a striking come back to its mainstream popularity through its routes: cars. One of my favorite movie cars {not much of a Mustang girl, though} was Steve McQueen's in Bullitt {1968}.

{Both of these movies were filmed during the said time period, so I don't feel a need to add vintage photos.}

Look at this flickr photo for a sort of mix of the 70s and 40s. It is lovely.

So, the colors: Oxford Navy, British Racing Green, Garnet, and Gold all from the fourties then to move on to the sixties and seventies and hopefully shoot their way to the twenty-first century. But it isn't just the colors {or we would have a team of rugby players}. It's the way they are worn.
Call me old fashioned, but I think these forgotten colors are staging a comeback!

I have always had such a girl crush on Zooey Deschanel, but this is over the top. Domino Magazine did a feature on her and her music room! I can't help but wonder if this is where her and M. Ward come up with their ideas. Probably not. {Plus, I endulged myself with some Bones last night, goood episode.}

I just can't get over her style. {Is it just me or is that a hairband crease on her arm?}

Dreams of a Houseboat

Ever since my gradmother had me watch the movie "Houseboat", I have been dreaming of owning one myself sometime in the future {perferably in Maine}. So, when I was surfing the web, I landed on this great blog. Soon, I found pictures of the housboat she lives in {*so jealous*}. It is quite a lovey little place. I have fallen in love with the concept of houseboats all over again.

Here's a little 2008 recap for the last day of the year:
~My first {and not last} trip to Paris/Europe
~Moved to Baltimore
~Jammed out to Elvis Costello non-stop
~Learned I had dimples like my mom{if I smile real hard}
~Took my last breath in my stinky ol high school
~Had my hair french braided and learned I still looked like I was fourteen
~Laughed a lot
~Filled in my last SAT/AP exam bubble {*phew*}
~Pwned in Rook
~Swam in a lake
~Put on the old ballet shoes and did a few sloppy pirouette {I ingured my knee in tenth grade and hadn't danced since...until this year}
~Voted!
~Screamed my head off on the Mummy ride at Universal
~Became a dark chocolatte lover
~Realized I had a love for fashion and sewing {which also means I started this blog}

And well...the rest is history.

Stitch, Abbie, Stitch!

So, I am working on a cross stitch project. I used to cross stitch when I was much younger, but now I am at it again. I am starting simple {Coldplay X&Y album, anyone?} and going from there. A Holiday Gift List of Inspiration: Late Elementary and Middle School Kids With Attitude

Not all of us have these people to give gifts to. Their age is tough. They deal with more politics {in the classroom}, their outer image, diversity, peer pressure, and learn more in an average school day than we do in a week. So, to help them stick it out just a few more years in the monotonous Harry Potter, Miley Cyrus, Cheetah Girls world, it would be great if they recieved gifts this Christmas that set them out from the crowd--in a good way.

Here is a HOLIDAY GIFT LIST OF INSPIRATION I compiled of possible gifts for men of the younger age {20s-30s} for you. He's got to be a classy, quirky, tad bit of a nerd, but these gifts will sureley say, "Hey, you're a little off beat, but I like you and you deserve a gift that speaks to you."

Sidenote: I was going to have the picture be expandable, but my html skills are suffering at the moment.

There is more to come (girlfriends, fathers, mothers, the teen, etc.)

I slept for 11 hours last night...like a log. Boy, was I tired from all the Thanksgiving happenings. I ate out twice yesterday. Once for breakfast at this Mom and Pop dive of a place all the locals to. And then for dinner at this great Italian place I had no idea about. But last night, as soon as my head hit the pillow, I was asleep.

Hello, Sunny Floridians!

That's what I said to my brother and his fiance when they picked me up at the airport yesterday. Yep, that's right: I flew down to Florida for Thanksgiving! Oh, how I missed the warmth. It is about 72 degrees out and Bethany said she was cold. I was hot.
We're going over to her parents' house for Thanksgiving meal.
It's good to be back, even if it is just for this short time.

Happy {Special} Weekend

There is the photo on flickr that put a grin on my face. Here's the story: I once had a leaf like this on my windshield and I thought it was pretty, but kept on driving. Then almost 20 miles later at my destination I saw it was gone. When I got out of the car, it was still stuck on on of the side windows. The leaf is now safely tucked in my journal. Do you have any special memory to share?

Snowing in Baltimore

Everytime I see snow for the first time of the year I think of this episode we had video taped when I was much younger of Winnie the Pooh. Christopher is excited about the first snow of the year. Guess what I just spotted outside the aparment window?

Flurries, really. Not enough to play in. But still. Maybe we'll have a white Christmas.

Nothing {to Wear}

Do you ever have those days where you look at your closet and it feels absolutly drab? Well today is one of those days. Actually, last night all of my muted colored clothes were dirty and I needed to wear layers. So I ended up wearing a yellow thermal and my lucky red tee (I took the SATs in it). I looked like McDonalds!

RIP Cool Hand

Paul Newman died today after a long struggle with cancer. He was defiantly one of my favorite actors and heart-throbs. "The Sting", "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", "Cool Hand Luke," all great movies. He dedicated much of his life in helping others. Even though he was 83, it is still a tragedy.

I Love You, Baltimore!

My favorite thing about the middle of the month...getting 500 pages of fashion, style, and things I cannot afford in the mail. But what do I love more? Turning to page 152 of Elle Magazine and seeing none other than my very own home town splashed on the Style Dispatch page. Oh, the pride I felt for Baltimore in all her glory.
In the world of "New York, New York"s (as much as I love Frank Sinatra) and Indianapolis Colts, I can't help but feel a certain pride when I see me very own Baltimore being noticed. When Leanne Shapton described the Baltimore Aquarium sitting on the Inner Harbor, a smile came to my face because she was talking about the place my mother used to bring my brothers and I before we were in school. Edgar Allen Poe- who's ghost supposedly haunts "The Horse You Came in On Saloon," (where my dad once took my mom when they were dating).
Then there's real Baltimore flavor (not New England flavor, Martha Stewart)-- Old Bay, thanks to a beloved German emigrant, Gustav Brunn. And though fellow Baltimorons put Old Bay on everything, the mention of it inevitably leads the discussion of crabs. Oh, you haven't had a crab until you've had one in Maryland. Crab soup, crab cake, crab salad, and just the crab (watch 'A Few Good Men' if you want to see Demi Moore annihilate a crab). More food: visit Cafe Hon (pronounced "hun") and learn where that fantastic accent John Travolta sported in 'Hairspray' came from. It's called Bawlmerese, hon.
If mentioning Sound Garden (a fantastic music joint where my dad and I like to go sometimes) wasn't enough, John Water's (the man behind 'Hairspray') name shows up if not once, several times.
Things she never did mention (which is okay, because these are local secrets) is the Bromo Seltzer Tower where each floor showcases an artist's gallery (very cool, by the way). In the Summer on Wendesday night it is Films on the Pier night (watch 'Sleepless in Seatle' to see Meg Ryan sit on the very same pier). One can get in free and watch that week's movie. The movies they show range from 'The Birds' to 'Shine a Light'. Baltimore is great in such that one can walk the streets and feel at home. Everything about it is so personable (watch 'Home for the Holidays' if you want to see Robert Downey Jr. prancing down the streets of Baltimore).
But in reality, there are too many nooks and cranies to explain all of the wonderful and inspiring things about Baltimore. You will just have to go there and fall in love for yourself.
